So I went to look at chicks today.......

Rainotebook; my order from Ideal on Tuesday included 10 'peanuts'. I only ordered 11 BOs so they included them for warmth. Thats a lot of chicks!

Pics?
This is such a great thread. I just got a brainstorm reading it. We are hatching eggs in our classroom at school. All but 7 have hatched out. We have been moving around numbers so everyone thinks theirs has hatched and there are no tears! But for those who haven't hatched I can go to Farm and Fleet and get some to make up for it! Oh yeah I could! Cuz 42 chicks is just not enough. (I already have 25 6 week olds in the brooders.

My feed store guy LEADS me to the chicks on a weekly basis with some boxed up. Today I went in for my weekly regiments and he had two albino guineas and a pearl? packaged and waiting. This has got to stop... I have 8 BAs, 2 ducks, 3 guineas that have ALL been purchased in a three week time period. Next time I'm going to... probably get more chicks. ><

I only wanted 6 chickens for a small coop. so I ordered 15 pullet chicks from my pet chicken (too many to choose from just couldn't decide) and I have 18 eggs in an incubator that just started hatching today.

Two of my daughters and I went to the feed store yesterday to buy more chicken food and came home with two silver laced wyandottes and a barred rock. They had just arrived in the mail from Ideal. We saw them take their first drink of water and eat their first bit of food. We are new to chickens and have one barred rock that is 10 weeks old and three more babies that are 7 weeks old. I called DH to ask him what he thought about us bringing home a few more. He told me that if chickens make me happy at the end of the day, then go ahead! So, we did!

The hardest thing was deciding which three to adopt!

It's so easy to justify more birds, isn't it?
I have 5 mature layers right now. They all have a safe place here until their natural deaths but sooner or later they may slow down as far as eggs go.
I also have 1 dear old ISA Brown who hasn't laid an egg since last spring.

When our feed store told me they were ordering day-olds I ordered 6 - 3 BR, 3 RIR.
The big day came, I collected my babies and put them in the brooder.

1 BR was dead the next morning so I went back to replace it. No BRs left in the extras so I got another RIR.
But wait! What if another one didn't make it?
So of course I got another, just in case.
Makes sense to me.

All 7 are fine, 5+ weeks later.

What kind of polish did you get? We picked up 2 Silver Laced that were a little younger (10 days)than our other chicks. We put them together and they did fine together. One of the little barred rocks seems to have taken them under her wing...literally!

The polish are 4 weeks now and the way the feathers have been growing on their heads is awesome!

A few years ago my wife banned me from looking at cars on the Internet.

I don't tell her when I find more chicks on craigs list. I don't have a chick problem. I can stop any time that I want.
