Is there a hatchery that doesn't charge $50 for shipping?? I just want 4-5 chicks. What is my best (and hopefully most economic) way to find chicks.

Go on your local CL or check your state agriculture paper.
One thing to be said about ordering from a hatchery though, you should get healthy chicks and not some diseased creatures from someone's backyard that they unknowingly are perpetuating. However, in past years I have seen some sick chicks come out of hatcheries but not as much as I hear others complain of buying chicks locally and getting ones that die within a week or two.

I see signs all over our area on people's mailboxes and fence posts saying they have chicks and ducklings for sale. All I can say is Buyer Beware! I usually get the victims from such sales and hear all the sob stories.

I don't have any chicks for sale right now plus I'm not very close to you, but contact chookschicks she's in Lawrence and often has them available....put it on the Kansas thread and someone up in your area might have some.
