At the top is a stickied thread "cortunix education time, start there, it should have everything you're looking for.

Wow, I was thinking about raising lamas myself. Only if I could get someone to send me some free. Just for me to test, and answer all my questions.

I have seen many generous offers on the board for free eggs, and some in PM, but all those offers required at least payment of shipping charges. The bare minimum.
I'm not trying to be mean, but please look at what you are asking.

Ken

Thanks Ken for the remarks. I no longer have quail, but definitely do your research and have your runner pens and set up reading before incubating any eggs.

Also, As a full time farmer, I'll tell you that I spend almost 2 hours wrapping, packing, selecting, transporting our eggs for shipment....This is a big time investnment when I should be planting, picking, weediung garden, making cheese, milking goats, etc etc

I've had a big contest and one giveaway, but most folks on here cannot just ship free eggs based on your desire to have some...No meanness intended. Just a time and economics point.

I got our quail eggs from Ms. AKA Bird Brain tori of Alaska and do plan on buying from her next year when pens are ready first.

God bless you and all your endeavors!
Nancy

1. What is their temperment: I'm told that coturnix (Japanese or pharoah) quail are like mini chickens.

Not too skittish...like people a bit.

2. what is the best breed for first timers: I've seen it recommended time and again for first timers to go for the coturnix, especially the Jumbo Coturnix...they are quite docile from what I understand

3. what does temp need to be at: Same specs as incubating chickens. 40% humidity for 14 days and then 60% humidity for the remaining 4. 99.5 degrees for a forced air.

4. how long does it take them to hatch 16-18 days.

5. what do they eat after they hatch: I have turkey starter for mine cause I can't get game bird starter where I live. It's fine. They need lots of protein...the starter I have is 28%.

6. how long is their life span/ if i keep some as pets: Good question! I'm not sure...I seem to remember 3 years if you don't make them lay in the winter. Forced laying over the winter months can shorten a hen's life to 18 months..

I have my eggs arriving today in the mail for my first hatch. I ordered Jumbo Coturnix eggs from a breeder close by...and the best part is that they only cost me $6/dozen.

That's not a huge investment, considering the time and effort put into raising the hens that lay the eggs.

All the best,

mean or not asking for FREE eggs is wrong when you havent been a member of the website for very long... I mean 39 posts, thats a newbie. Perhaps this persons parents never taught them any etiquette...I could never just walk up to a perfect stranger and ask them to GIVE me 16 dollars (the average cost of shipping packaging and the eggs).

People on this website are VERY generous, and if this person were to wait patiently long enough some one will offer up some cheap or free eggs (usually with only shipping requested). but apparently this person has not only no etiquette but no patience as well...Both to me are huge flaws we see in our society today!!!

I would try ebay for really cheap eggs. I just won 20 A & M eggs for $0.99. With shipping it only came to 9.00 I think that is as close to free as you are going to find. Out of the 20, 17 seem to be devoloping nicely.

Oh, Honey, don't take it so hard- IMO they were NICE about it

I read this forum off and on for about a year before I registered so even though my post count is low I've been around

and reading a LOT and I don't think I've ever seen anyone ask for FREE eggs before... just sayin'

For the value, paying for eggs is a steal (check the eggs for sale section of the forum, there are quail egg posts)...people are very generous with the number of eggs you get for little $

So I wish you luck with your quail adventure!
