It is supposed to be linked highly with the extreme crests desired in silkies. I think it originated in the polish breed, but I don't know anything about polish.
I hope that eventually the large crests can be found without the vaults. In the meantime, I'm definitely not culling chickens lacking vaults but I have mostly vaulted silkies.
