So I've got a nasty rooster on my hands...

My Cricketer is not a threat to me, but to my chickens. He's actually afraid of me, I'm pretty sure, after I had to pin him down using three assistants to clip his wings. But the hens are terrified of him except for the white one in the picture, I'm not even joking that is the closest the other hens ever get. :lau What should I do to keep him from fighting and attacking the girlies? I think he's a Delaware.

Why do you have a rooster? That will affect the best answer for you...

--If you personally like him as a pet, or if you like to hear him crow in the morning, consider housing him apart from the hens. If you have multiple roosters, they may (not guaranteed) be able to live together as a bachelor flock, apart from the hens.

--If you only want the hens to lay eggs for eating, you do not need a rooster at all.

--If you think the rooster protects the hens from predators, consider having a well-secured coop and no rooster.

--If you want a rooster for breeding, consider getting a different rooster (do you want sons that act like him?) Or consider housing the rooster separately except for brief visits from the hens for mating purposes. If he mates with each hen once or twice per visit, once or twice a week, that should be plenty to fertilize all the eggs they lay.

--I agree with Duckwrestler404 that the rooster might make a good chicken dinner!

--If you consider re-homing the rooster, consider how he behaves with people, and with hens, and be careful that his behavior gets tested with the possible new people (and/or new hens). It may not be possible to find a good home for him.

We have just the opposite with our Welsummer Rooster! He attacks my husband and I both! We have to be extremely careful when we are in the coop with him. He protects his ladies, and I am assuming that he considers us a threat to them. When we cleaned out the coop on Sunday, we had to coax him into a little pen so we could clean. He was not happy!! I might try the utube idea to see if we can change his ways (or he may just end up on the dinner table)! He is a handsome Rooster!!

You have a really nice flock! Have they always been together in the coop?

I had a similar situation last week. My rooster very suddenly became really nasty to the dominant hen who was usually his buddy. I knocked up a quick coop for him out of a wooden box and put him in it. Since it was rather small i still let him free range with the hens whenever I was present, even if it was just 15-20 minutes a day. For the first couple of days she was still petrified of him but after 6 days, things calmed down somewhat and I let him get into the coop with them. She was very apprehensive at first but they settled down for the night together and have been fine ever since. Rather than jump to hasty conclusions, just be patient for a while. It's probably spring hormones kicking in.
