I saw my neighbor's chickens while I was having a dog emergency. (Long story short, my Alaskan Malamute decided to take a tumble down the stairs -- he's recuperating and hopefully will be okay)

Anyway, the size of the birds made me pause. They're like -- BIG.

Really big. Almost intimidatingly so.

They aren't particularly friendly either and are free range. I suspect they looked bigger because it was cold and windy and they were puffed out

I've seen chickens before (I'm not a cityslicker) and I've seen my neighbor's chickens before, but for some reason that day it made a bit of an impression. I don't know why. (Maybe the whole emergency thing?

I took a look at my 8-9 week old chicks and they don't intimidate me in the slightest. I handle and enjoy all them. While I knew they need to be big to lay eggs, somehow the size of my neighbors chickens made me pause. Good thing I'm raising mine to adults, huh?

I'm good with big animals like horses, cattle, dogs and whatnot. I think it was just a surprise to see how big my chicks will become. Has anyone else had this happen where they looked at other chickens?

Heh....I had that same pause when my wife told me how big ours were going to get. A 9lb chicken?!? You have to be kidding me! Ours are six weeks old, and while still loving and small, they could give me a run for my money if they ganged-up on me. I imagine dealing with the five we're going to eventually have out in the coop is going to be interesting!
Bantams will be the way to go for the next flock!

I've had people tell me that my chickens seem big to them - but they just look "normal" to me

You wont even realize how big your babies are getting until one day it just hits you....you have full grown chickens. Then you will want to get little chickies again.

They look normal to me also, but some can be a bit big.

And I have an alaskan malamute also. She hapens like stairs very much! lol

I like that my Dominique Roo is in there for comparison. We call them Godzilla Chickens.

Yeah, one of my Malamutes (I have 4) injured his back. He's now resting with meds. I could say the chicks pushed him down the stairs, but I'd be lying.

He did it himself seeing the neighbor's cat.

Whoa. Now those are some big chickens! Have you weighed them?

And not eating them because they have names....that would be something I'd do.
