Hi, I live in Spokane, Wa. & just signed up. Just starting to research info about raising chickens. I just want 3 or 4 laying hens for eggs & the joy of more pets. My first question is...can you tell the sex of a chick from birth, or young enough to be sure I'm not buying a rooster?

I can not sex chics until they are at least 4 weeks old. You can order them from hatcheries who sells them already sexed . Just order pullets. If you order straight run it is a 50/50 chance of Roos and pulets. Good luck and Welcome !!!

Welcome!! and to answer your question... If you get a sex-link breed, it is my understanding that you can tell the difference in male and female by the color.

You can tell on sex links and barred rocks that I am aware of.
