Yesterday morning I went out to the coop as usual and found my 1 year old BR collapsed on the ground. She was fine the previous night when we tucked her in, or seemed fine. I brought her in the house and she died within 10 min. It's like she was waiting for me to find her, and then she just slipped away as I pet her and talked to her. After some research, I'm feeling pretty certain it was the heat that got her. The humidity is oppressive here lately. She was one of two remaining from my very first original flock of 5 BR's - I sold three last winter, leaving me with the two. I now have one...and she is so lonely....poor girl...they were always together.
Anyway - she was the head of the flock...and with her gone, there will be some shifts. Would this be a good time to start putting my new (not really new - but they've been sleeping at night in a separate coop due to bully issues, but free range all together during the day with no issue) pullets in with my main flock? There are only 5 in my main flock - one BR, two silkies (one is currently broody), my peaceful Ameraucana and my Icelandic....who is my main concern. My Icelandic has always been at the bottom of the pecking order...and every time I put her with the babies, she bullies them horribly...even though the babies are all her size now. I'm thinking about taking her out for a few nights and letting the babies integrate with the others, and then adding her back.
Any ideas? Rosie, my deceased BR was the head of the flock. The new three I'd be adding are one Australorp who can hold her own, a light Brahma who can also hold her own...and a VERY timid Faverolle who got beat up severely last time I tried to integrate these two little flocks. Since that happened, she's scared of her own shadow and freaks out and flees any time anything comes towards her....chicken or human......but she is best buds with the brahma and australorp as she's grown up with them.
I think if I remove the Icelandic to the other small coop (visible from main coop, separated by chicken wire), they'd all be ok...and then she could range with them during the day.
