This is the easiest way for me to think of it, when calculating square footage. A square foot is a square that is 1 foot x 1 foot. When you are calculating how many square feet are in an area, you are calculating how many of those 1 foot x 1 foot squares are in that area.
1 foot x 1 foot = 1 square foot
2 feet x 2 feet = 4 square feet
When doing the math for square footage, in round numbers, you multiple the length by the width.
1 ft x 1 ft = 1 sq ft
2 ft x 2 ft = 4 sq ft
5 ft x 10 ft = 50 sq ft
