I'm not quite sure how to start this project! We are in SW MO and there are a few chickens shows every year from what I can tell so far. I'm not sure what breeds to look at, are some over saturated? Are some too rare to have enough numbers to compete against? What organizations do we need to belong to? Should we start with buying chicks from a hatchery or is it better to start with chickens from a private breeder?

Thanks for any help!

Hello and welcome to BYC! :frow Glad you joined.
Do not buy hatchery stock if you want to show. They are not show quality birds.
Consider attending some poultry shows to see what breeds are numerous and what actually appeals to you that you think would be a good fit for you and your chicken accommodations.
Then seek out breeders near you and tell them your desire for show quality birds.
As for the actual showing part, learn what you can at the shows. Talk to exhibitors. Read the SOP for the breed you are interested in. Contact your local 4H chapter and talk to someone there about your desires.
Good luck!!

Thanks, there really is no 4H here and I've not yet found a poultry club (searching online) but I know they must exist! So far not found any breeders (other than hatcheries) but I know they must be out there as well!
