My neighbor decided to get their own flock of chickens shortly after I acquired mine. At first it went well over there, but it did not last long and the newness/excitement wore off. Their coop was not up to standard living space, so They did increase the coop size somewhat. It is sufficent as far as spacing goes. This past year went okay. At first they kept their area somewhat clean, but now the floor is full of poop and stinks to high heaven. They leave often and leave me in charge to feed them. Their waterer is all slimy green and the poop rarely gets cleaned out. I take my supplies over and give a very good cleaning each and every time I'm over there, which I don't mind. I love chickens, they've helped me mentally make my day brighter everyday. I spends many hours a day sitting with them outside.
Just recently I've heard from them how disgusted they are owning the chickens. This will probably be better for them since they don't take the time to clean out their coop and run. It smells so badly that you literally need a gas mask to walk in there. I'm just very disheartened over this because I really do like these neighbors. I just don't agree at all on their animal care. At minimum they could clean the floor once a day. My kids could not stand their coop smell and was gagging.:/
They often bring home animals that are rehomed shortly after. I'm hoping the flock soon goes to a new home. They are talking about rehoming their flock. It's not fair to them to live in the filth they are forced to live in. I really do like my neighbors as people, but not as animal owners. Every animal they've owned has not had the best care.:/
Anyways, I had to vent. Chickens do not take that much work to clean up. Just a few scoops from a litter box scooper or a quick rake does the trick.
