Soap Makers Help!

That was easy. Really easy! I even used the distillation method.

While searching the net for directions, I also found directions for making rose oil, much the same way that I made my rosemary oil. The soaper who posted the directions for the rose oil said that the scent DOES hold! Since we're trying to use as many botanicals from the garden as possible, this is an appealing addition to the purchased scents.

This is such a fun hobby!

I did mapquest today to see how far away I am from the farm lol. I'm exactly three hours away lol I'm gonna have to make my way over there. The kids would love it espeacially my 9 year old. We went to a dairy cow place last summer and he feel in love with it! A born farm hand lol.

28 miles south of us on IL 40 is I-80.

Would love to have you come!! I work week days off the farm, and Sat morn at Farmer's Market and Sun morn is church.

Come on up! We're always there (unless we're some place else!)

Hey Ladies,

We host a Homesteading Weekend every summer (this year will be our 5th). It is ALWAYS the weekend After Father's Day, which puts it June 27 & 28 this year.

There is plenty of space for camping or Holiday Inn, Country Inn & Suites or Motel 8 close by. All we ask is you bring food to share in the pot luck meals. The food doesn't have to be pre-made either.

It's a Grand Time!

All y'all invited!

You're a busy gal!

Yup, just a tad south of the I-80 is where my family farmed, settling there in the late 1850s and buying their property in 1861. The Hennepin Canal wasn't there yet, of course, but the plans were in place. Sadly, they sold the property just a year before the canal was started. In fact, they were so close to the canal that my ancestor's first husband's family farm is now under water - most of it anyway. I was there two summers ago and it was cool to drive by the old farm. I actually met the young man who now owns it with his wife and is raising a family there - just as you are doing on your farm. Aren't cycles of history, cool?

Is Muller, Swiss? There were a large number of Swiss and German settlers in Illinois who came by way of Pennsylvania in the 1850s and 1860s.

Back to soap - Which natural additive gives the nicest light pink to soap? I'd like to try that with the rose soap I hope to make this weekend.

Polish, most of my husband's family is from NW Indiana

A pink clay or ultra marine.

I can't remember which was lighter. I did have a rose soap with a light pink color and a darker pinker swirl (with crushed rose petals).

That would make sense. You're fairly close to the Mississippi right?

Interesting. That's a less common origin of that surname. German and Swiss is more common, with the umlaut, of course. Incidentally, I'm 1/4 Polish (actually Kashubian) on my mom's side and 1/4+ Swiss on my dad's side. None of my Polish surnames are typical "ski" names and several of them sound more Germanic than Polish.

That sounds beautiful! I don't think I can pull off a clay or ultra marine by this weekend. Would one of the juices work? I just want a light pink - not anything real vibrant.

About 40 miles east, but we're right by the Rock River which feeds the feeder canal

DH's family said his was one of the few Polish families that did not change to Moeller during WW II.

I believe any of the juices would fade to a tan.

OK, I did some browsing on your site and on the Net. I could probably find some beet root or rose hip powder or hibiscus flowers if that would work.

Does beet juice hold up?

Anyone have experience with any of this?

I am loving this...

My husband and I together (I couldnt believe it) Just did our first BIG batch..

with olive, crisco, coconut, and grapeseed.. This was the first time I used a stick blender.. (got one for christmas) IT TOOK 10 MIN!!!!! I am so used to it taking almost 2 hours..
caf.gif
it traced perfect! I added goats milk.. (I have wanted to do this) I took out 13.2 oz of water and added the 13.2 oz of goat milk back in. I added the lye to the water first put it on ice and then added the almost frozen goats milk.. I want to try a batch with nothing but goats milk no added water..

I did not insulate this big mold. But being that it is cool outside what do I need to look for with the seperation and such?? and how long will it take ... like will it be in the middle of the night?

we did this at 7 pm.. should I just set the whole thing outside tonight anyway..??

I am soooo excited.. I am going to try another recipe tomorrow!

I will post some pics as soon as I load them..

That's awesome smom1976! It looks amazing! How is this batch coming along? I can't wait to see your pictures. How did you scent it?

I'm happy for you that you got a stick blender to help. It's amazing how little time it takes. Whoever it was who tried that for the first time, I just want to say
