Soap Makers Help!

I use goat's milk from my pygmies so it would be full fat.... Makes very yummy feta cheese so that sounds reasonable that it would react... I guess my girls just wanted to give me some extra fatty milk during that milking.... As I said, I use it all the time and this is the second time it happened and it looked like my cheese does when it starts to curdle....

I was in a hurry when pouring the lye.... I'll try to pour it more slowly next time....

I got an email from Texas Natural Supply that they're having a sale.... TNSAUG15 for 15% off bulk bases and TNSAUG10 for 10% off everything else... sale is from 8/12 - 8/15.... Just thought I'd pass this on... I really like their stuff....

Recipe Help!

A friend and I are just starting to make soap, planning to sell and bring in some extra money. We are currently playing with recipes, looking for a recipe that will make a nice hard bar, good sudsing, not too harsh. And, we have molds that make 8 bars. So we are looking for recipe ideas that will make 32 or 64 ounces of soap!

Please reply here or email me directly [email protected]

What recipe are you using now or are you say that you have never made soap before?

I replied to you on the recipe thread, you should look there and see if there is a recipe you want to try on there. Millersoap.com is a also a great source of information. Please don't rush into making soap before you are ready, you don't want to sell a product that could actually hurt some one like lye heavy soap could.

I also thought, you can order premade unscented uncolored soap base to shred up and rebatch yourself form several suppliers. Maybe look into that.

IT is a great scent, can't wait to use it. I bought some rose clay from texas natural supply, plan to use that to give it a nice tint. I also got lemon verbena, sweet pumpkin, oatmeal milk and honey(heavenly), lavender, and sandal wood vanilla. I'm almost out of lye. ordered from aaa and waiting for my shipment.

I make soap from raw Jersy Milk and haven't had that happen BUT, I add the lye to fully frozen milk chunks and let the lye melt the frozen milk. I keep the lye/milk solution as cold as possible, even using a SB to remove the last of the frozen chunks of milk.

Once all the frozen milk has melted (less than 5 minutes), I add it IMMEDIATELY to the waiting oils.

You don't want your milk/lye solution to 'cool' down. You want to prevent it from ever heating up.

What happened to you is the lye did start saponifying the fat in the milk.

When incorporating the lye into the frozen milk, I will dump about 1/3 of the lye on to the milk, stir with whisk to get the lye incorporated and get the milk starting to thaw. Then add half of remainder of the lye, Stir well with whisk, then add the remaining lye, stir with whisk. Use SB (make sure it is always fully immersed and you are wearing eye protection!) to break up remaining milk cubes.

The whole process takes mere minutes.

MullersLaneFarm: Thanks... This was the second time it happened and I just knew it had to be something that I hadn't done before... I usually make the milk a slushie and slowly pour in the lye... I think both times it happened I had dumped the lye in rather quickly.... I'll try your approach and see if it comes out better....

I assume your oils were cooled down prior to starting the lye so that you could dump the lye solution in right away..... Will this cause the soap to saponify quicker??
