Soap Makers Help!

She does milk based soaping...the way I do...at trace with chilled/frozen milk/powdered etc. SHE shows you how to do all milks and the different techniques...you make the soapers preference. (-: Its so much info...

LOVE it...he does a great job. Anne Watson...shows you how to incorporate milk without scorching the milk...as referenced by the peachy change of color of the lye/milk solution in his video. I've done freezing method, cavitch's right before mixing in the oils, and also AT trace...and by far...the color of the soap with cavitch's and at trace is much whiter. Watson details this in her book. This is why I posted the link to her book...because her cool methods result in whiter soap.

this is odd to me.. the scortching you all refer to. I made goat milk soap last week and I poured the lye directlyinto the milk (slowly of course) with no bowl of ice water or any frozen milk and my soap turned out white as ivory soap.... I made only lard milk and lye soap thought.... I dont know what its gonna turn out like as I was playing around... but.... it turned out bright white.... I have seen this orange-ish colored scortching but... mine didnt turn that way why?

U used lard...AND you probably used pasteurized. Makes whiter soap...both. The heat of pasteurization stablizes the color in milk...I notice the same with juice. But with vegetarian soap AND UNpasteurized...we notice a more caramel color....when mixing the fresh goatsmilk into the lye. NOT wrong either way....just soapers preference. Same with gelling...
Soap is kind of like potato salad....everyone makes it different.

I'm a purist when it comes to using milks/creams, et al. IMHO, it's not a 'milk soap', if there is other than milk used as liquid. The fresher, the better.

I'd really like to see soaps that use milk as an additive (i.e. part of the liquid) be identified as such. But that's just me ... not everyone can have a goat or cow in their back yard and get fresh milk!

eta: the heat of pastuerization also kills all the wonderful benefits of milk ... the use of dry milk have even less benefits. But of course both are enriched and fortified with other additives!

I also have been asked a lot about using milk other than cow or goat...for allergy reasons. So knowing how to make soap with coconut, soy, yogurt etc is beneficial too. You can soap in these 3 ways also....with other milks.

DH and I have a constant debate...to go caramel OR go pasteurized/whiter soap. HE wins sometimes!!

Ummm, I have a question. The soap that I just made that has the shaved soap on top. How do you package them? All suggestions are very welcome at this point considering I just realized that I have no clue as to a good way of packaging or if I shouldn't package at all.

If they don't fit in the box, won't the shrink wrap work? I'm not sure, my soaps are shaped differently so I haven't had this problem.

I'll try to get some pics later today or tomorrow, but my burberry for men turned out really nice! Smells good too! I like that scent better than the Irish Tweed.
