I am happy to see a soap makers group here on BYC. My mother taught me how to make a basic oatmeal and honey lye soap using the hot process method. A few months later while visiting and oil artist's gallery in Kauai last year, I saw a selection of beautiful artistic soaps. It was so inspiring and I have been playing around with soap ever since. I have a lot of clean friends and family members but have not yet felt confident enough to sell my products. I look forward to joining in this group and hopefully learning more from you all.

I have a question. I made a batch of calendula soap and used the flowers in the lye water to extract the color. Since I didn't want to have the flowers throughout the bar, just on the top for decoration, I strained it. I thought my strainer was stainless steel. The handle part and rim that holds the mesh was, but the mesh itself must have been some other kind of metal or maybe the stainless steel was too thin to withstand the heat. When I strained it, I heard sizzling and noticed that the mesh had a hole in it. This strained lye water went into my batch and now I am wondering if there may be a problem with the soap. I went ahead and finished it using the hot process, after all it was already in there. It lathers up well and has a pleasant odor. I just wonder if it is safe for me to use. Is there a way to test for something being wrong with it?

Hmmm, that is not something I know right off hand. I know I would not sell that batch at all. I would play it better safe than sorry and toss it.
