Hello all,

I joined BYC because my 7 yr old daughter wants to start raising chickens and rabbits when she joins 4-H. I'm excited by the egg and meat possibilities, as well as learning opportunities for the children. I grew up on a farm, but we had cows and pigs, no chickens. I'm here to learn and to expose her to some resources that I hope she will use for the rest of her life.

What a fun thing for your daughter. Kids love chickens. There are several breeds that are nicer than others. I don't know how much space you have, but I always suggest Brahmas since they are very sweet. My Speckled Sussex are also very sweet, and aren't as big if you want a smaller breed.

Hello and welcome. Raising chickens is a great way to spend quality bonding time with kids. My grand kids just love them.

My daughter loves speckled chicken (think barred rock) and goofy looking chickens (to me, think silkies). I'm gonna start there and do some research with her to see what she wants. Of course we may just get whatever the feed store has in spring...lol

Also looking at the awesome coop designs on here are so helpful! we have a suburban backyard, but have approval for chickens and rabbits, just not many (3 of each).
