Soffits or no soffits

I have a question about ventilation and predator proofing the ventilation. We are building a coop now, and are wondering whether we should use screen soffits or cover them with wood. Screens would increase ventilation but we are concerned that the raccoons will be able to get through the screens. Any suggestions for predatpr proofing soffits?

Plan on well attached hardware cloth, not screening or chicken wire. Mary
