i have an easter egger that just started laying today or yesterday. I found a soft shell egg this morning that was cracked open. Then around noon she payed another egg with no she'll at all. Does anyone know why this happens (two eggs in one day/soft shell/no shell) and should I be worried or is this a normal thing for first time layers. Thanks!

Don't worry about it, it takes a bit of time for a young hens laying organs to get into gear. When some of my hens just began laying I got fart eggs, soft shelled eggs and my favourite - double yolkers.

Give her a week or two to sort out her system and soon she'll be laying you lovely eggs :)

I have two laying daily for a few days. Today I got one so far but the other one has been laying in the late afternoon however I found a soft shell egg under the roost today and of course it was broken. I'm not sure if it was one of the ones already laying or if it is one of the others trying to start. Thoughts?

If its a one off, don't worry, it's probably just a quirk in the system. Let us know if it happens again. Do they have free choice grit/oyster shell?

And the one that lays in the afternoon is normally done by 230. It's now 420 and no egg from her. I'm thinking it might be her egg since she is not looking toward the nesting boxes today.

Hens don't lay at a precise time each day, most lay on a 25 hour cycle and it's very rare that a hen will lay every single day. She's probably having a day off :)

If their not eating any oyster shells try to give it to them a different way. If they still don't like it ( like mine) try giving them dried egg shells crunched up into tiny pieces. Some people say the egg shells don't give them any calcium, but i don't agree with that claim. That's all my chickens will eat for calcium and my egg shells are very hard!

hope this helps your situation and let me know how it goes.

I disagree, chickens monitor their own calcium levels, if they are not eating the free choice calcium, it means they don't need it. Egg shell do contain calcium :)
