Soft egg

My ducks just laid an egg that has a shell so soft that it's flexible.
This is the first soft egg. Others have all been thick shells. Ducks are a little over 1 year old.
Does this just "happen"?

It does just happen. You usually see it when a bird is starting up laying or shutting down, though you can see them anytime. Sometimes they are caused by stress, and other times it's a glitch in the system, or the system working out the kinks.
