Hi I am new to keeping hens, I have had 3 point of lay hens for about 2 weeks. They have started to lay small eggs which I believe is normal to start with. Today I found 3 soft shelled eggs on the shelf where they sleep and not in the nesting box as before. I also found 1 egg in the nesting box which was perfectly formed ie.......hard shelled. We are having some extreamly hot out of the normal weather for Suffolk UK. Please can some one advise me if I am doing anything wrong? I feed them Layer pellets and plenty of water, grit and oyster shell. They also forage in the garden for short times 3 times a day. I have 2 dogs but the hens do not seem to be bothered by them at all. My girls and cleaned out every day and the shelf was free from eggs last night so can only assume they were laid this morning buy 3!!!!! I only have 3 girls and I am not yet in tune with who lays when or what. Before this happened I did have 2 eggs which were double yolked. Any help with this would be more than welcome Thank you

Update.......Yesterday my girls laid 2 nice healthy eggs in the nesting box

But this morning 1 of my girls laid another soft shelled egg on the roosting shelf over night

Does anyone know 1) why she is doing this in the night?
2) why she is doing this on the roosting shelf?
Any advice would be most welcome, I am very new to chicken keeping........thankyou

Hey, like you they are new to this, so they will probably make a few mistakes along the way. Don't worry the eggs will become normal and the girls will eventually find a better place to lay. Try putting a fake egg in the nest box, just to give them a little encouragement . Even a golf ball will do.
