I have a new hampshire red who has been laying almost a month now but recently she's been laying a rubber egg (sometimes even two in one night!) every 2-3 days it seems. I got a normal egg from her yesterday with a good thick shell but this morning I got the rubber egg plus a second shell-less egg with a smooshed soft shell thing beside it. I give her greens, oyster shell, and egg shells she eats layer feed and black oil sunflower seeds like they're going out of style. She looks healthy her feathers are shiny, she's a good weight and very active. But despite all this I'm starting to worry I've never had anything like this happen. I've seen the occasional rubber egg but not 2 one rubber and one all busted from the same hen in one day. And yet like I said maybe 2-3 times a week I get a normal egg from her. What should I do she's healthy as far as I know, is this just her body trying to figure out laying? When should it stop? Is she sick? Should she be culled or can she live like this?

Sometimes the egg laying mechanism on young birds will become out of whack. It is very possible that she will go back to laying normally again. I would not suggest feeding a whole lot of black oil sunflower, which is very high in fat and can decrease their intake of layer feed which is more balanced.

That's good to hear, I've been doing the whole web MD panic but for chickens lol I'll wait then and see if it evens out before I worry myself more over it.
