My two girls are 4 years old and last week my ameraucana laid a soft shelled egg on my patio chair that had “stuff” hanging out of it. I carefully took the egg in to take it apart.
The Shell was soft and inside the shell was a clear fluid. The next layer was a membrane that surrounded this thing that was covered in blood vessels and was about the size of a human eyeball and had the same pressure too. The yolk was on the inside of the blood vessels eyeball like thing.
Sally had laid an egg about 5 days before this weird one. She has been an inconsistent layer the last several months so this wasn’t uncommon but I am worried if something is wrong and this weird egg was a sign of something.
Has anyone ever seen something like this?

I have not actually seen an egg like this before, thank you for sharing.
Sadly I don't think this is a good sign and I am not sure if there is anything you can do to "fix" this.

Have your girls ever had a respiratory illness?
You may find some answers here:

I don't think I've ever seen anything like that, even in pictures.

The blood vessels are puzzling. @Eggcessive @coach723 @dawg53 @TwoCrows @speckledhen

I've never seen anything like that before. Hopefully someone will have an idea.
Does make me wonder if she has a reproductive issue going on and I would surely be keeping an eye on her. The chalaza/chalazae is there, looks like the red is the vitelline membrane, or what should have been. So this would have happened right after the yolk was released.

I've seen something similar, though not exactly like that. So many things can happen with hens' reproductive systems, some not a sign of anything, some are, and you can't always know if it is bad or just a glitch.

This was what I was talking about, though no veins. That would say to me it was part of a yolk, just encasing other stuff it shouldn't have in it, but that's just a guess.

Wow, I've never anything like this! I agree with the others, something is going on in her reproductive system, most likely not good. Definitely keep an eye out for internal laying, I personally would run some Amoxicillin through her just in case. 125mg per 2.2 pounds of bird, every 12 hours for 7 days.

Thanks for sharing.

The blood vessels make it look like it may have been a tumor, possibly that broke loose at the same time as the yolk was released. Just a wild guess. If there is a veterinary school near you, you might get a pathologist to look at it for educational purposes. If you still have it, keep it in a ziplock bag in the fridge while you check around.
