My girls are new layers and I've gotten a couple of soft shelled eggs. This latest held together when i picked it up and it was in the nest box not on the floor. Anyhow I'm going to get some oyster shells but they are expensive. Do I have to give them to the girls on a regular basis? Can I just give them some to get things going? Maybe I can get the doc to prescribe Boniva? Think Sally Fields would know if it will work? Just answer the serious questions if you'd like cause I am serious.

Those should work and if you put some thing and let it sit in there it lasts along time. So dont get a big bag.

Get some oyster shells. They're not that expensive (at least around here), but one bag lasts FOREVER!! Either that or you can grind up your used egg shells and give them those.

I did give them some crushed egg shells yesterday cause they're white and my girls are brown layers and I figure they won't make the connection.
I bought some oyster shell today and they were over $5 for a pound.
I have to tell you that the Country max had a #50 bag that said oyster shell on it.
Well I flipped it over and it had "silica" in it. The warning said to wear a mask and gloves when handling it. It had all kinds of warnings about getting breathing problems and washing cloths and showering, etc. etc. It also used the word toxic.
So please be careful and read the label.

Oyster shell should not have ANY Silica in it.... are you sure you got oyster shell - just plain broken shell for chickens - nothing else???

I just went and looked at my bag and there is nothing about silica on it (its not from Country max... but... it just says oyster shell).

Silica will kill a chicken....I believe.

My oyster shell costs 20 cents a pound at Southern States... same as the grit.. 20 cents a pound.
