My young stag has been corded for a while now to keep him from attacking the seramas when he matures, as he's a game bird. He hasn't matured yet lmfao and is still an incredible weenie.
But he hurt his leg. I think he might have tried to pull free of the cord? He's favoring it only slightly. It is the leg he was tethered to.
He is not tethered at night only during the day and for now I have removed the cord and let him free range with the others so he can stretch the sore leg and hopefully it gets better on its own.
No heat, no visible injury, no swelling. Still using it, just seems a bit sore.
Any ideas? I think I might have some metacam on hand, but to be fair they're insanely tough and he probably doesn't need it. I'm concerned it will happen again when I put him back on the cord. I don't really have an alternative (once he becomes aggressive, for now he can stay free ranging with the group) unless I use a small ex-pen for dogs and put something over top maybe.

Could be sore up in the hip area. Check there for heat and swelling. I would let him baby it, and watch for bumble foot. It's easy to miss a thorn or splinter the first few days. Maybe let him stand in some Epsom salt. Take a five gallon bucket. Cut a hole in lid for his head to stick out. And let him stand in warm Epsom salts. Hoping for fast full recovery

No bumble foot. He's got the most perfect feet it's almost ridiculous he looks like he gets pedicures or something. I'll keep a close eye on it.

I wouldn't give him the metacam.
Let him roam as he pleases.
Once he starts making trouble, then pen him.
4x8 dome pen or similar works, just make sure other stags/cockerels/roosters aren't able to come near to antagonize him. Try your best to avoid fence fighting.

I haven't- I opened it and it somehow the fluid leaked out of the bottle and it looks funny anyway. He is roaming and doing fine. Still a bit sore, but he is ranging around, eating/drinking and has made friends with the 4 very young gamebirds I have ranging right now. They are following him around like he's the king bird lol. His leg seems less sore than yesterday. He is putting a fair bit of weight on it now.
The other roosters leave him well alone and won't fence fight- two mature seramas who don't have any interest in fighting. So I may just put up a dome when he gets problematic. If he ever does. Right now he's a perfect gentleman.

Glad he's doing better.

It's always a good idea to have a spare pen ready, you never know when you'll need it.

Stags can be great and get along fine, but usually at some point they just don't.

For sure. I normally always do, I just moved so getting coops and pens and fences up are all a big work in progress, but no matter what I have the x-pen I can stuff him in if he's a problem.
He is almost normal on the leg today. Still resting more than most chickens (but he's always been like that. He likes a good nap, I guess.) but he's doing well. Made sure he got some poultry cell vitamins in him today and will give for the next couple just to boost him- the other birds are on it too because the weather is changing and they're molting.
