This last week we could see the northern lights here in Colorado SE of Denver. The weather has been mild in the 60's-70's. Coincidental with the solar flares my 14 hens' egg production dropped from 9-14 eggs/day to 5-6 eggs/day. In reading about the solar flares I learned that the magnetic fields affect animals including birds. Has anyone else observed this. The scientist in me is really curious. I think the eggs may be coming back as I got 8 yesterday.

I'm not familiar with solar flares, but here in Wisconsin, we have northern lights often. Not usually to the extent of the beautiful colors recently seen, just usually white streaks in the skies. They are especially pronounced in the winter when they are so bright they reflect off the snow.

Our silkies laying have never been affected by anything solar that I'm aware of. They still lay in the winter, too, but about half as many. Silkies probably wouldn't be a great test if that's something you wanted to do. :)

Thank you. They were red here and some folks saw some green. It was quite the treat as I had only seen them before while doing geologic work in northern Ontario Canada.
