I live in Massachusetts and have started making plans for my first winter with chickens. I have five pullets in a 4x4 coop (yes, I know it is a bit of a squeeze) and an 8x12 run. We let them out for supervised free range for an hour or two a day, but I anticipate that this will not happen much in winter (I hate winter). My big worry is what to do with water and I've seen lots of solutions here.

My Pet Chicken has a solar sipper. Has anyone used this? Does it need direct sunlight or will indirect due?

I do not know. I'm just here to say that it will keep water unfrozen 20F and up but not below 20F.

Massachusetts does get cold, but -20 F is unusual (happily!). I'm going to do a heated base in the coop, this would be supplemental in the run. Maybe I'll just stick with the rubber bowl as a 2nd source.
