So I've found myself in possession of another button quail. The owner didn't tell me how old she was, but she's laying age. I can't put her in with my 2 as they're very pushy and try to pick at her. Am I able to keep her solo, or should I look for a male for her?
(Also, she has this weird behavior where she sits down, and puts her ear to the ground. if anyone has ever seen this, what does it mean?)

I have not had buttons for a couple decades. If possible get the new hen a male. If I remember right the weird behavior is that of hen that wants to mate.

Quail can't be kept alone. Could you post a picture of her weird behaviour? If it is that she wants a mate, you should get her one. Otherwise, if you don't want her to breed, females can be housed with other females.

She does it too infrequently for me to get my camera out to catch it. I guess the question for me to ask now is if anyone knows a button breeder in indiana.

Can you keep her in view of the others but with a divider or glass/plastic between her and them? She won't be lonely that way, but they can't attack her (and they can be vicious little things). Hopefully the fact that it's spring for you means that it won't be too hard to find button eggs.

It sounds like her odd behaviour is her inviting the male to mate with her.

yeah I can move her within eyeshot, but space prevents me from putting them right next to each other. I'll try to get something that allows me to place them next to each other while I either buy her a partner, or hatch one.
