Either way it's a male, those wispy hackle feathers are an indicator of gender.

I’d say that’s a cockerel poorly masquerading as a hen in order to not be sent to freezer camp! Definitely male though.

My first cockerels didn't crow until 7-8 months old, then the next batch started crowing at 10 weeks. It's a male with those wispy hackle feathers. My first guess would be RIR, but there are other breeds that look very similar so I could be wrong about that.

Funny you say it that way. This is the only chicken that fought when Iwas processing. So I kept it for company for the goat.
