If you're like me you hate being woken up at 4 am by a crowing rooster. After racking my brain and even contemplating getting rid of the roosters I came up with this idea of deflecting the sound in a different direction. My coop is about 125 feet from the house and when the rooster crows you may as well be in the coop with him it's so loud. Anyway, the windows are on two sides of the coop and they have to stay open during the summer because of the heat so I couldn't just close them at night because I may wake up to dead chickens. I took some storage totes and cut one end out and screwed the tote to the screened window with the cut end facing the back woods hoping to deflect the noise. Much to my surprise I woke up at 4 am the next morning and heard just a distant muffled crowing that I could barely hear and couldn't hear at all with the window fan running, I can now sleep a full night!!!!

thats brilliant

and why no one thought of it before i dont know

plastic totes resonate sound so they are great sound barriers

trowing the sound back inside

like a gitar

sound goes iside the resonating chamber and then gets trown back ouyt just like the tote going into teh tote and back out keeping inside the coop

well done for that idea

Interesting idea--always love hearing about diy moments of genius.

I wonder how this affects the air flow since now there seems to be a less direct flow path from one open window to the other. Do prevailing winds tend to come from the direction that the open side of the bin faces? If so, it might act like a funnel and improve air flow, but, otherwise, I hope this doesn't make an unhealthy difference.

Keep us posted, please.

If you add the wave type foam that use in PC packaging, it will cancel the sound out which reduce even less noise.

Jude, that was a concern of mine also and I decided since I'm expanding the coop I will add vents to the front and back of the coop for more circulation.. also my chickens only spend evenings in the coop, they have several thousand square feet of open run..

Didn't see pictures in your post....but saw the first one via the link.

Nice idea. Now patent it, make one lighter/smaller/cheaper with that insulation in ---and become a zillionaire. lol. Thanks for posting.
