I finally took some photo's of our progress on the inside. It's been so hot and hubby is not in tip top health right now. I managed to paint some of the Kilz on the outside this evening. I get more paint on me than what I'm painting.

I've been playing around with the idea of making inside screens that have hinges and hardware cloth to keep the chickens from pooping inside the window. Anyone have a different suggestion?

This DOES look great! What kind of protection is on the windows now? If just a regular window screen, then you definitely need hardware cloth over them. You could just staple it on the inside - or the outside, I guess that would be better so you can open the windows.

Kathy...

We have the same design. Our "barn" was a preconstructed shed bought by the previous owner of our property. We just converted ours to a chicken coop as well.

Our Coop Structure looks exactly like yours on the inside (the framing). I LOVE how you cut out lower windows. We built the same type of framing and door on the inside. I love it because I leave open the barn doors during the day and they still get great ventiliation. We also cut two windows on the back wall but have none on the sides. It's great to see what you've done as the shape of the barn makes putting in multiple windows a challenge!

Great job!

thank you Karen. I want to add some vents up top. I found some at a garage sale for .50 cents each. Here is the place all painted. The nest box is temporary. I want to buy a smaller one that will fit the space this fall. I hope I can find one that is. I bought it at Antiques week at Warrenton, Tx. If I can I'll sell that one to my sister.
I put a piece of tin below the roost for the poo until I can build a poo pan.
Taking a dirt bath. That one naked butt guy is a rooster I have no idea what breed he is. Poor guy. Glad they have a new home.

I know the kids on the right are 1 black Minorca and my Brown Danish Leghorns. That gal on the left is a mystery. She isn't anything I ordered.

Kathy,

I think it looks great! LOVE the old antique nesting boxes. If I lived in Texas, I'd buy them from you!

Great pictures of your chickens too. So sorry to hear/see the rooster with missing feathers. Was he a rescue? Your chickens are so lucky--you've provided them with a beautiful and safe home.

Take care,

Karen Borges

You don't state where you live, but If your windows are open all summer, or year round, you could put up the same lattice work that's on the outside to keep the birds off the window sills. Or make a wooden frame with hardware cloth to cover the window and remove as you want to open and close the windows.

Karen, they just stayed too long in the chick coop.

and it seemed like it took forever to get them a bigger home. He is a mistake in my order with Ideal. He was supposed to be a she and a Brown Danish Leghorn. He also has a sister and the closest I can come to identifying their breed is Hampshire's. I had quite a few mistakes with this order. I have 5 roosters and am only supposed to have 2.
I call that rooster Honky because he doesn't cluck or crow, he kind of honks like a duck when he makes a sound. Unfortunately that must be the reason the other's pick on him, but since putting them in the bigger area they don't pick him like they did.

I live in very small town and around the whole area where the chickens are is a net wire fence with a hot wire to keep dogs and other critters out. My dogs who are enclosed were mildly interested in the chickens. Our newest puppy Tebow wants to play with them, but he knows they are off limits.
