So yesterday I noticed that one of my baby leg horns is seemingly slower than the rest. She doesnt seem to run aroud as much, shes doesnt seem to be growing as fast as the rest if at all. I saw her eat a couple pellets and drink some water but she doesnt seem to george like the rest. I picked her up her vent is clear I cant feal her crop which tells me its not packed. I dont know what to do for this little girl. I dont really have the capability of moving her from the others and dont know if thats the best ide as she wants to be with her sisters. I have 22 mixed birds in a tractor (only 5 weeks old) Ive got turkey eggs in the incubator, Ive got baby turkeys in the brooder, my coop has 18 birds and my brooding shed has 148 White rock X cornish and 20 leg horns (meats and legs 9 days old).
Im thinking after break fast Ill go sit in with them and see if I cant feed her some meal worms and maybe a yogurt and scramled egg platter. See if I cant get some protien in her belly. I dont mind stoping in and hand feeding her a few worms a few times a day, im home and love having a perpus to sit with them! Any sugestions as what I can do to help this little girl catch up?
Just as a bassis for all Ive had them on vitamins and electrolites till yesterday.

How does her stool look?
I would try and hand feed her just to make sure she eats. Poor baby!
Keep me posted!

Hey BigRedRoo,
I'm not an expert but I do have a runty chick that I asked questions about and can pass on that info.
Sometimes they grow at different rates. My runty doesn't eat as much or drink as much as the 2 others but she does continue to grow, just slower. I make sure she gets as many mealworms as the others, 'cause no chicken will pass up those! I tried feeding cooked egg as someone suggested but she wasn't really interested. Neither were the other littles, but my biggies (8weekers) were.
You could add a couple drops of Braggs-type Apple Cider Vinegar (the cloudy kind which is the "mother") to their water. That helps establish good bacteria in them so they are less likely to get overgrowths of bad bacteria.
Your idea of spending time with her and giving extra mealworms is really good. Do that and pay attention to what her poos look like. If they are normal (little tubes with a little white), then she probably just got a slower metabolism than the others.
Post again to let us know how that goes.
Hope that helps!

Do you give your chicks medicated feed? if not maybe you could try that mixed with some water so its easier for her to get down. Feeding her hard boiled egg is good too and I have also heard of people giving lethargic chicks sugar water as a boost. Another thing you could try is taking a trip to your local feed store ... sometimes they have supplements/meds you could try and the workers can often be quite knowledgable. Sorry I couldn't offer more advice ... I don't have too much experience with sick chickies.

Hi,

But stress is stress from any situation . One of the 1st things stress does in poultry
is compromise their ability to uptake nutrition from the G.I. tract . So we continue to
give them helps they can't uptake and they continue to wilt. The Bovidr Labs products
bypass this problem and shunt directly to the bloodstream delivering energy to live.
Here's how to mitigate stress:.

You can use Poultry Nutri-Drench and Pet Nutri-Drops interchangeably with the same
usage and dosage instructions per a conversation I had with the science techs at Bovidr Labs
which makes both formulas. One drop only by mouth every 8-10 hour as needed.
Put 2cc's per gallon in their water for the 1st 2 weeks to get them off to a strong start.
I've been using Bovidr labs Drops and Drenches on my dogs and poultry for over a decade.
Raising 3 hatches on them now. They are absorbed directly into the bloodstream. Your chick
can't digest any helps right now anyway, that is why it is wilting. The trick is to get nutrition to
live
into the chick before its body systems reach a tipping point and collapse from an inability
to uptake helps thru the G.I tract. 50% uptake in 30 minutes. 99% utilization.
Big raisers love this product, one with 100's of thousands of turkeys. They don't waste money
on things which don't work, smile.
Best Success,
Karen
I get mine at at Tractor Supply which has the best price for both formulas 7.-10. dollars.
Just get the 4-6 oz. bottle. No need for the qt. Or get at your local feed store. If your
feed store is out of Poultry and Pet formulas, you can use another formula. Tho the
Bovidr Labs formulas are species specific, they also meet the scientific standards for a
universal dosage. In a pinch, you can use one of the other species formulas. Just use
the same dosage and usage instructions as for Pet Nutri-Drops or Poultry Nutri-Drench.
I have used Beef Nutri-Drench on my dogs , using the Pet Nutri-Drops instructions.
I have used Goat Nutri-Drench on my poultry , using the Poultry Nutri-Drench
instructions.
Both with good success.

For some reason The subscription notification didnt show up. So to up date, this morning I have notice some fluid stuck to her but which looks to me like chicken urine. Im not seeing her poop but thats probably shes not eating. Ive tried to source these drops but am unseccessfull. Id love her to eat some meal worms but she wont even give them a look. when shes in my hands she just wants to run back to the others. Shes staying about the same which tells me if I dont get some nutriance in her today she will most definetly pass.
Queen Bee, I wish she was just a runt, I belive this is just as 3riverchick has discribed. Her intestines are not functioning properly and in which case shes not getting the nutriance she needs. What I dont understand is that she is 11 days old which I would think if this were the case that she couldnt get any nutriance she would have passed by now. So this gives me hope that she is obsorbing something.
