Hello! I am a first time chicken mama and I have 6 females of different breeds and sizes all about 22 weeks (maybe a bit older tsc chicks) 2 of them have been laying for about a month and I have nothing from the others!! My best layer is a Japanese bantam! The other is a reddish colored bantam. I have a silkie bantam, a golden laced Wyandotte bantam, and two full size mixes (Easter Egger, silkie and other...) that have not become layers yet! I feed them grower feed, black oil sunflower seeds, oatmeal, and they free range. Any input or advice would be appreciated!

I wouldn't worry most bantams don't start laying till 22-28wks give them a few more wks they will get there

Thank you! I am in western New York and our weather is about to change dramatically. Do you think that will cause them to not lay until spring?

It could effect their start but probably not there first yr of laying is usually consistent i would be sure to give them extra protein if you have rough/hard winters throughout the winter it will help them with egg production i have lots of bantams that have not started to lay they are 24wks im in Northern Ohio so winter is crazy here too the extra protein is super important for flocks that live in cold weather

Thank you! What do you recommend for extra protein? And do you have any other winter advice?

Np i give mine super worms fresh and mealworms also fresh i have my own mealworm farm best and easiest critter I have ever raised and I put cat food in with there feed or you can put fish oil in there food its a great source of protein

Lentil sprouts too they are easy to grow inside to so you don't have to buy them
I tried to raise mealworms too!! I failed! 3 shipments, but I can’t get them going! I actually have some on the way now! I will try the lentil sprouts! I can grow things 😆 I’ll try gosh oil too! Wet or dry cat food? Thank you again!
