I had 4 of the pullets that died out of 26. They were suppose to be born last Tuesday and delivered last Thursday. But they came Friday so I am guessing they were born on Wednesday. They are from the local 4-H program. As a group they seem healthy. I have checked on them at least 5 times a day. I try to keep the heat bulb around 90. I will move it up or down depending on the temp. As far as the chicks goes they seem content . They are active and I think the temp is ok because they do not huddle in a tight group under the light or they do not try to stay away from it either. They are all over the place. I do have them outside but they are in a new coop that does not leak or have drafts on them. They are also in a tub at least 16 inches high so any drafts would be above them. What I have seen with the 4 that died was they would not move much or eat. Its been 30 years since I have been around young pullets so I forgot a lot. But I do remember loosing some, 3-4 but then we would get them in groups of 100. This morning the rest seemed fine but they did yesterday morning as well. I think I had the first 3 to die within 24 hours between Sat and Sun. Then one this morning. I have gave them new water and washed out the water jug each day. I washed it thoroughly then washed it with just water. I then let it dry. I also dump out the food when it gets clumpy. I put it in a pie pan at first but then the second day I had them I put it in one of the feeders made for them. For the most part I see no reason for them to die now other than the trip from Texas to Tennessee. So should I be concerned or do you think they will stop dying. As of this morning the ones left seemed spry and running around. But they did that yesterday morning.

If you ordered from a hatchery, I would contact that hatchery immediately to let them know of the losses. Often they will replace or reimburse you for the losses.

I would think those that died did so due to difficulties in transport, but keep a close eye on them for a while and observe any unhealthy signs (like not eating).

Good luck.
