Thankfully not.

Here we go -
1.) what kind of chickens do you have? and how many? Are they pets or food?

I have 8 right now. 4 mystery hens and one mystery roo, 3 White Crested Black Polish- two pullets and one roo. They are both pets and food. The crested are pets/egg makers. The others are potenial dinners.

2.) Did you build your own coop?

Not yet. Right now we're using rabbit hutches. We have a shed kit coming in the mail this week to get sorted before winter.

3.) what does your run look like? what do you use for the floor of your run? Hay, grass, stones, sand, etc.

Ours is basically just grass and trees. It's a fenced in area that the previous owner kept her dogs in. We call it a nursery because we're going to keep our baby goats in there with the chickens till they're big enough to be put with the general goat population.

4.) what about the inside of the coop do you use hay, shaving, wood chips, etc?

In each coop we use hay.

5.) Have your chickens ever been sick?

Our chickens have not been sick yet.

6.) what meds do you use?

None

7.) have any special foods you feed them?

I don't know about special. Feed, scraps, they have access to a lot of land to scratch and peck for bugs...

8.)where do you live?

Foothills of NC

9.) how are your winters do you do anything special for
your chickens in the winter?

Our winters are pretty mild I believe. We'll have a large coop with a light for both warmth and to encourage better egg production over the winter.

10.) how about wet weather do you have any protective covering over your run to keep chickens dry?

Right now there is no protective covering, exactly. But there are many places for them to walk under that would keep them dry if they didn't want to be in the rain or in the coop.

11.) are you getting eggs? If so do you sell them? How much do you ask a dozen?

Since moving our chickens we haven't been getting but about 2 every 3 days. I have a large family, I don't know with my chickens if they'll ever make more than we can consume.

1. I have a pair of buff silkies, two EEs, 3 BO (one roo), two RIRs, and one SLW, they are pets that lay eggs.

2. We built our own coops, one of which was a free "playhouse deer blind" that had been vandalized and we rebuilt.

3. My run, usually refered to as chickie jail, is seldom used as the birdies free range in the yard. It has grass, dirt and a stone path. I also add mulched leaves.

4. One coop has sand over linoleum, the other has mulched leaves over linoleum.

5. I had one chicken get sick, some reproductive issues, she died.

6. Only topicals for pick and bug bites on combs. DE in the dust bathing areas, and an occasional dusting with DE.

7. They get tablescraps, grapes, sunflower seeds, watermelon when its hot, wind fall pears,

8. I live in central Texas, in the 'burbs.

9. The winters are mild, on cold nights the windows are closed and covered.

10. It rains, they get wet. They could go in the coop, but never do. They occasionally hang out under the house's overhang.

11. I get 4-6 eggs a day. The silkie hasn't laid since she went broody. I give the excess to friends, and neighbors.

12. No special interesting things here, but if the silkies keep drinking out of the pond instead of their waterers, I might be able to describe a water rescue.

1.) what kind of chickens do you have? and how many? Are they pets or food?

I have 2 frizzled serama, 4 black star pullets and 11 reg. serama--Pets, breeding stock for the betterment of the breed

2.) Did you build your own coop?
Sort of..we have a gig concrete bld. that is like a stall and tack room with concrete floor, we moved the hay to the stall side that we dont use, the tack to the horse trailer and built roosts and nest boxes
I also built a HUGE chicken tractor, that is moveable if you have 4 people, lol

3.) what does your run look like? what do you use for the floor of your run? Hay, grass, stones, sand, etc.
There are still plants in there, mostly weeds though, like lambs quareters, I will then either use stones or may just spred out old shavings and hay...read about someones run that was a compost too and the birds mixed it up looking for bugs..hmmmm

4.) what about the inside of the coop do you use hay, shaving, wood chips, etc?
Wood shavings and Straw in the winter

We are in cahoots in raising 50 more serama this fall and winter. He is experienced and Im new and Ill have to ask him what it is!

9.) how are your winters do you do anything special for your chickens in the winter? Got them all this spring! We will see!

10.) how about wet weather do you have any protective covering over your run to keep chickens dry? The doors are open to the coops they mostly just go in, although we had a windstorm that blew our trampoline into a tree and out in the field so we took the black "tarp" part off of it and hung it over the run for shade.

11.) are you getting eggs? If so do you sell them? How much do you ask a dozen?
Not yet. I have good stock now, but am trying to hatch eggs out with these friends, I send all but 4 hens to breed with a champion quality small roo,
I would probably sell them for about 20.00 a dozen, it seems to be good for the going rate of good seramas
12.) Have you run into any differculties with your chickens that others may be interested in?
Not really yet. The small chick is just so tiny, I dont think he is sick. I just think that he is an A class baby and needs a little boost!

1.) what kind of chickens do you have? and how many? Are they pets or food?
I have 4 red sexlinks that are 6 months old. And 10 little ones supposedly Rhode Island Reds, but only 3 of them are red. The others are some sort of mutt. Three of them are roosters. They are pets.

2.) Did you build your own coop?
I didn't but BirdHearder (DH) did- And is working on coop #2

3.) what does your run look like? what do you use for the floor of your run? Hay, grass, stones, sand, etc.
Run is fully enclosed in chicken wire. Used to be grass, but now is dirt. But they get fress grass clippings weekly.

4.) what about the inside of the coop do you use hay, shaving, wood chips, etc?
Shavings- with past chickens we used hay. I like shavings better

5.) Have your chickens ever been sick?
Had 1 die at 5 days old from pasty butt. Had another get "retrieved" by neighbors dog. Luckily it was just a few feathers missing. And I think a little brain damage .

6.) what meds do you use?
None

7.) have any special foods you feed them?
They get treats- fruits, veggies, rice

8.)where do you live?
Maryland- between the Atlantic and the Chesapeake

9.) how are your winters do you do anything special for your chickens in the winter?
Winters aren't very bad- generally around freezing. I don't know what we'll do- but no heatlamps. We had heatlamps on our last chickens 5 years ago, and it resulted in a fire.

10.) how about wet weather do you have any protective covering over your run to keep chickens dry?
There is a section that has a covered porch. When it rains-they play in the unprotected area

11.) are you getting eggs? If so do you sell them? How much do you ask a dozen?
Right now, 4 eggs a day from the older ones. The younger ones are 17 weeks old, so soon we'll have more. Most eggs go to neighbors for free, for allowing the chickens to roam their yards. I did make our first sale- $3.00/dz

12.) Have you run into any differculties with your chickens that others may be interested in?
So far, nothing. But if I do, I'd definately share here.
