Some weird stuff for a new chicken owner...

Uh-Oh, I see you have posted more than five posts. You are a BYC addict now

I am glad that things are working out well for your girls, and yes, you do have very beautiful eggs! I am a new chicken owner too, and I learn something new from either them or the forums every single day. One of the things that I have noticed here is that there is no stupid question, someone will always chime in to help. It's great!!!

Good thing, as I have another question! Of the five hens I've had for a grand total of on week today (yippe!), one of the blue cochins doesn't seem to 1. get herself back in the henhouse for the night (everybody else was in but her--she was all alone perched on the henhouse support beam at 8:30 tonight...) and 2. probably because she has issues with the henhouse, she keeps laying eggs on the ground. She is the only one who won't go back and lay in the nesting box/es inside the henhouse. ARGH I lifted the ladder per the suggestion in this stream (thanks!) thinking it was too steep for her, but can't think what else to do. I put her up on the deck manually and she stepped through the door, and jumped up on the perch next to the other blue for the night, so she obviously would rather be inside with the rest. Thoughts?

Oops--one more question

When the hens were in the garden my lynx-point siamese caught sight of them and walked over to check them out. Not stalking just like, jeepers, what are these things?? They bunched together but kept eating, and slowly put themselves back in the run. (He ran away when one looked at him crosswise.) Any worries there?

He is funny--when I am inside the fenced run with them he is obviously distressed and meows at me until I come out. Guess he doesn't think I'm safe in there!

Thanks for the Welcome! (I sent you an email about where I got my hens.)

Does everyone in SoCo have chickens? Seems like it!

How much do free-range eggs sell for when you see them, out of curiosity? My colleagues have asked to buy 6-packs from me, but not sure what is fair...

Thanks!

I live in Texas & the person that sold me 10 RIR. Told me to sell the eggs for 4 bucks a dozen. I haven't gotten any eggs yet but when I do they will be 4 bucks.

Welcome!

From looking at your pictures your ladder seems rather steep! If you could add another piece to it this would reduce the incline considerably.

There is a "poop page" on this site that you could also look at to try to diagnose problems.

Thanks! i found the poop page, complete with photos, and maybe it is just normal for waht they are eating. Looks brown an runny but not bloody or any of the other nasty pictured things....

I put a wooden box about 10 inched high under the ramp which helped the angle a lot. At least she went in the henhouse tonight all by herself! (Still had the egg on the ground today, but one thing at a time...!)

Crazy things!
