Hi everyone!! My name is Kelcey and my loving and very excited wife Holly and our three kids, Justus 18, Brittney 15 and Joey 13 are for the most part new to raising chickens. I grew up on a very large hog farm (500 sow) operation here in Kansas. My wife grew up an Army city brat in Wyoming, Utah and finally Kansas. We have been together for 9 absolute wonderful years where I have slowly molded her and the kids to the home grown farm way of life and thinking for that matter. My wife and I are avid outdoors enthusiast who love archery and freezing our tushes off in a tree stand or fishing for large-mouth bass, crappie, catfish in farm ponds and white bass and flat heads in the river and walk trolling for Walleye in the spring. We hope to bag a turkey this spring and can not wait for the weather to warm up so we can go fishing. The archery 3D tournaments will soon be starting up as well. I love to build things and am really looking forward to building a new brooder and chicken coop.
My mother just moved to a farm less than 30 minutes away and there is a HUGE chicken coop/barn for raising chickens with a large fenced in yard for them to free range and graze. It took a lot of work to get it all cleaned up, fixed up and disinfected to be ready for the 87 chicks that are anxiously ready to finish growing in my garage in make shift brooders made of 3 old stock tanks. I couldn't make up my mind about meat or eggs so I thought lets go for a little of both. Being that I also couldn't decide which breeds to go with we now have 10 different breeds. We have 12 Black Australorp, 11 California White Leghorns, 10 Rhode Island Reds, 12 Buff Orpingtons, 10 Barred Plimith Rocks, 10 Silver Laced Wyandottes, 10 Black Sex-Links, 7 Brown Leghorns, 2 Production Reds and 2 Cornish S/R. The plan is to take the majority to the farm at my Moms where my little brother is ready and willing to help out with the chores, and to keep a few here at home to enjoy. My uncle has been very knowledgeable and forthcoming with the advice and I have read Storey's Guide to Raising Chickens about 4 times now and keep going back to it and searching the web for the frequent questions that arise. That brings us to where I found this wonderful site chuck full of eager enthusiast like my wife and myself having fun and helping each other!!!
