some yolk on outside of egg HELP

OK, yesterday i took all the straw out of the nest boxes because it was dirty, and didnt get shavings back in them last night, boxes are bare. today, i went out to check for eggs and there was an egg sitting in the nest box and it had some very distinct dried yellow yolk smears on it. the egg is not cracked at all. there were no other signs of broken eggs in the box, none last night when i cleaned them out, and this egg was cold, so it had been there since earlier this morning. Also, the egg was kindof porous (moreso than usual) and a little bumpy and weird in places. Her eggs are always perfectly shapen and nice. What happened?? I have no idea.
Im not wondering for the sake of wondering, I thought Id heard that the eggs can break inside the chicken and thought maybe this is a possibility, but i dont know what its called, or what to do if it is the case, or even how to check. ANY help would be greatly appreciated!

Whenever I see dried yolk on an egg, I have to suspect egg eaters...either an egg got stepped on and then eaten, was cracked and leaking and was eaten, or one of my hens decided it would be nice to break open and eat an egg.

Egg eating is a nasty habit...I understand once it starts, it's very difficult to stop, and have read that if you can figure out who's doing it it's best to cull that chicken as it will teach egg eating to the others.

I have seven hens in one coop and have an egg eaten at least once a week, and no idea who's doing it or how to tell. I did once see them step on an egg in their excitement for some fresh food in the feeder, and it took them all of about 15 seconds to eat that broken egg to nothing. They ate the shell and all!

well, thats what i was afraid of, but saw no other indications of it, no yolk smears on the box, not a speck of shell either. But you think egg eating is more probable than the other ? the other thing is, the egg was cold, so it had been in there for a while and no one bothered it. Would they eat eggs only occasionally?
