Somebody tie me down!

Thanks for this discussion. I'm reading this on day 20 of my first attempt at hatching. Of 37 eggs in the bator, 3 chicks are completely out of the shells, and another 10 eggs pipped. I have been worrying about everything. My teenagers were convinced I should have opened it up to 'save' a chick who couldn't get his head free from the last bit of shell. He's free now of course, with no intervention. I came here trying to find a reason to open the lid and 'help' - thanks again for the firm 'No!'

All I am gonna say is if you cannot stand it at least leave the bator lid down and open up one of the little plastic windows on the top. Then only minimal heat and humidity are lost. I know Miss Prissy....... it is against the rule but at least I am not TOTALLY breaking the rules!!!

I'm right there with ya dude! I have one chick that just this moment is coming out of the shell and 5 of the 9 in the carton have pipped - they are peeping - I'm so there with my flashlight but I am not opening the bator this time!

I am on my first hatch and am so glad I plan on being very busy that last three days (it is my daughters birthday weekend

so will be doing the whole school treat and big party thing all weekend!) I won't even be home much. I can't hardly leave things alone now, constantly checking temp and humidity and (I hate to admit) candling 3 times already

(on day 13). I just don't think I could leave it alone if I were home with nothing to do.

Okay, Fudgie, now I know who you are! You changed your name. Dang, sitting here tonight makes me wish that I had some more of your fudge. I've given the new chicks away because none were the color of blue that I wanted; four of them are splashes. A lady on BYC who doesn't live far from me is coming to get them tomorrow at 1:00 P.M. Victoria, my silkie babysitter, is going to miss them, but if she goes broody, I'll give her some of my Orpington eggs to hatch; that'll make her happy. I am determined to get three hens the color that I want, VERY dark blue. I don't care if I have to buy/hatch a thousand eggs, the odds are I WILL get almost blackish blue sooner or later. Heck, there are lots of people who will take the chicks, so I won't be stuck with them. I now have three hens and a rooster. I never want more than six bbs Orpington hens and one rooster at the most. Five and one will be ideal.
