Someone give me the "Genetics for Dummies" information? :)

Just want someone to try to explain to me a kind of "Genetics of chickens for dummies" if it's possible? I have a red silkie rooster mating with a black silkie hen and we've got a black and grey silkie chick. How did this work?

Black is dominant. The grey one we can't yet explain.
Does the red rooster have black in his tail or wings?

Ah right, so any rooster that mates with her, the chick will have a high chance of being black?

The rooster does have a barring i think its called - black stripes on his tail and wing tips.

There are a few genes dominant over "black" eg dominant white and sexlinked barring.
The grey chick could be such a barred chicken, but there should be a white dot on its head.

The red could be carrying blue, too...

I hear blue described as grey all the time.

He has grey or blue, on his chest, feet, above both eyes and on his wings.
