I just went outside to water our garden and feed the flock and found my rooster dead on top of all the nesting boxes, his poor little neck was broken.

He was a gorgeous huge rooster that had the most unique crow I have ever heard. We had two hens go missing before and every time its at night, the coop is comepletely secure we dont have a lock on it but it does have a handle that has to be twisted and lifted to open so it had to be a human. Im scared now though about whats going to happen to my ladies, will they stop laying all together ? Is on going to try to become the " leader "? Im thinking that one of my barred rock chicks is a roo because its comb is diffrent then its sibling, but Im not sure what to expect. please help.

Sorry to hear about your roo.

The girls will lay fine without a roo, just no chicks.

One of the girls will be lead hen, but continue to lay, so all is good unless you are looking to hatch those eggs.

You can buy outdoor locks at Home Depot or Lowe's and install with just a couple of quick shots of a drill and a couple of screws. We have done this on the coop and run that are outside our fenced areas. Having to use a key is a bit of a pain, but it's worth the peace of mind.

Sorry about your roo.

So sorry! It's hard to believe someone would be so cruel as to just kill him rather than approach you if his crowing was bothering them. Guess it's time for a lock on the coop, even though it is a pain to have to carry a key with you all the time.

CASEY

Or you could get a game camera, and file a police report so there will be a record when the culprit returns.

that is horrible!! If you find out who did it please report this!! Trasspassing, animal cruelty...geesh!

They have a camera hunters use that snaps a picture when the motion dector goes off. They leave them out in the woods. Cheaper then security cameras and get the same result! Walmart i believe has them.

SNAG this sucker!!

Best of luck

Thats horrible! I'm so sorry i would be very upset and worried if someone came into my coop and just did that to one of my hens or our rooster. thats disturbing!. get the camera and catch this creep!

I have a pretty good idea of who it was , theres this little punk thats always riding his dirt bike on my property and I yelled at him yesterday for tresspassing and I was out in the back feeding the chickens when I saw him, this isnt the first time ive seen this kid in my yard ( by kid i mean some 18 year old punk) . I think its time to start leaving the dogs outside at night again.

That's horrible. I'd be mortified. I agree - lock up the place for your chickens immediate protection. I like the game camera idea to catch the punk. I hope your dogs scare the dickens out of trespassers.

How horrible.

And there are those that wonder why I prefer my chickens (and other animals) to people.Sigh.
