I have been reading on here for awhile now.. But what really caught my attention was, Homemade incubator forum.. Man! I have a old wine fridge with the open glass door, how cool would that be for the grandchildren to see. Life hatch right before their eyes. So we built the incubator and gathered a few eggs from neighbors . for a test run.. About 20 days later we had 20 chicks out of 30 eggs.. My grand kids loved it, they would take turns marking off the days..Reliving my childhood thru there eyes.. Lets do it again pawman, and so we did.. 36 eggs . about 20 days later,32 chicks and lost 3 more afterwards..Still a good run from some newbies
NOW is where the monster has come to play.. I aquired 3 egg turners. And we are about to set over 100 EGGS!!... It is a good thing we have plenty of room and I enjoy eating eggs 3 time a day .. So my hats off to all of you . I have to go and build a laying coop.. thanks again:)

We better get this post moved over to flock management section quick so you can figure out what you are going to do with all these chicks you are hatching out!
I am so lucky I don't have a wine fridge sitting around.

That is so awesome! I loved doing it for my kids and myself. I was raised in the city and never saw a real chicken unil later in life.

We absolutely love incubating eggs, we only do a dozen each time and my incubator is literally a box, bowl of water, heat lamp and thermometer. We have gotten 3 out of 12 so that's not too bad. I am addicted to candeling, I just love it!

That's so coooooooool I have 33 eggs out of that 1 is zipping and 15 more pipped. My grandson is going to spend his second night over so he can watch them tonight. I love hatching and I love the look on my grand kids faces

Uh oh. Now I feel the urge to get on Freecycle and find a defunct wine fridge... What have you done?!? DH is already about to leave me and the kids if we don't choose him over the brooder! Woe is me- an addiction is a terrible thing to waste

I know what you mean. I have 13 older girls and had to build a second pen to move my younger ones outside (there are 13 of them and they are now 8 weeks old) and here I go again and I have 16 of 33 eggs hatching today. My DH is going to scream...

My Mother use to hatch out chicks and ducks on the stove over the pilot light and a moist towel.3 at a time.
I could not. maybe because my stove is electric. We have a old dog house that is well insulated, Today I put a thermostat and heat lamp in it for our 4 week old.s I have our last hatchlings in a old metal suit case. I thru a 8x8 building togather out of tin from a old trailer house with 3 set of 12 hole laying boxes in it. Nothing fancy . When my grandkids get home from school we will paint it. Two girls are 4 and one girl is 3. Never a dull moment around here..
And now the circle begins again
