I have just recently hatched some eggs and one of them is a Bantey. It was born Friday and it has been doing fine. Eating, drinking, chirping, and very active. It does have spraddle leg and my husband and I looked it up and did the steps to help it which it was working perfectly and the baby has been standing. When I woke up this morning, it was doing fine, and about an hour later, I went back to check on it, and it is real weak and wont get up. I have to force it to drink and it wont eat. Its bottom isnt clogged so I dont know what has caused this all of a sudden.................................I just walked back to check on it and it has passed

but does anyone know what caused this? I would still like to know incase this happens again bc I am still caring for one that has spraddle leg

so sorry to hear

what is their bedding like? newspaper is a big cause of splayed legs. but as to why it got sick... i have no idea. as long as they have clean water and the right food it should be fine. i've read that some chickens have a very sensitive spot on the top of their head. if one of the other chicks was bullying it it could have pecked her and she had a concussion. just guessing

but if you have a mix of banty and regular chicks i might try seperating it.

Well we did just have them in a cardboard box with some grass in it, but when we found out about the spraddle leg, we put a little rubber mat in like they suggested so they can get a grip. But they came out of the incubator with the problem so I dont know. And I know it wasnt due to him being bullied bc he was only in there with one other chick and they actually cuddled and we also have bantys mixed with others outside and have never had a problem. Im just baffled as to what happened bc we kept them stocked with food and water and like I said, it was doing fine, even when I got up this morning, then it just got ill within an hour and died within the next couple of hours. The weird thing was, was I thought that maybe the bandage we had around its legs was too tight or something (I was just trying to come up with any kind of solution), so I took the bandage off, and within a half hour is when it died. I just cant figure it out. We had 15 hatch all together and so far, thats the only one that has died. The rest, other than the one that is still struggling with spraddle, is already outside with a hen and is happy and healthy. There has got to be something that caused this and Im just scared that if I dont figure it out, I might lose another one if it happens again.

hmmm i'm sorry i've never had this happen to me and i've never heard of something like it. the only thing i can even guess is that it atethe grass and couldn't digest it. so sorry
