I have an egg that was abandoned by a hen a couple of days ago and is internally peeping, he hasnt poked a hole threw the egg yet and he has been peeping for about 30 hours, since i got him from the nest, i dont know if he was peeping then to. I can feel him tapping at the egg lots and peeping every 10 minutes i dont want him to die of exhaustion, is there any way i can poke a hole without hurting him so he doesnt die?? Someone, PLEASE HELP!! Any advice would be much appreciated!!

Well I am NOT an expert. ( Dogs are more my thing in the knowledge department - I'm still kicking myself for not intervening with a Chihuahua pup birth. Waited to go to vet, pup died - like?? 15 years ago!) ANYWAY...
Based on that experience.. I would say go for it.. BUT..??
Maybe try to tell which 'end' of the egg is peeping, then maybe tap it on a counter top to crack hopefully near the beak. I would not POKE the egg with anything.)

I can guarantee you will feel worse with a quiet egg if you do nothing. :(

Hopefully someone more chicken expert-y will show up in a minute on here. :)

hi i'm no expert either but please read the assisted hatch thread first. you can put that in the search.
will post this and add more in the next post to you

I agree with cherterr.if you don't help it will die anyway.if it does not make it ,at least you tried.good luck.

hi again

i had to assist my chick yesterday and she is doing really well.
is the egg in an incubator right now? it needs warmth and humidity.

if the answer is yes, what day of the hatch are you on? i'd be more inclined to assist if you are overdue. mine was day 23.

if you do assist, you need to candle to see where the beak is and mark it with a pencil. that is where the hole needs to be. i'd be very scared to tap the egg on something as you have very little control. i made a scoring mark with the corner of some tweezers and kept at it to make a hole, then removed small pieces of shell with the tweezers till i could see the beak.

much goes wrong by doing things too fast. if you assist, leave the chick for a few hours after each step.

I assisted a chick successfully yesterday. My fault - I got the lockdown dates on clutches confused. I normally use a tack to make a small hole in the egg near the beak. Whatever method you use to pip the egg, do so very carefully. Assisting a chick IS a matter of life or death. Like esther5 said, slowly and carefully. Never rush.

Thank you all sooooo much, if this chick lives it will be thanks to you guys!! I am going to try to assist him, i have gotten very atached to the little egg, i have even named it, i will keep you guys posted. Thank you all again so much!!!
