Someone told DH chicks could...

By simply washing your hands thoroughly after handling, the chance of contracting any disease from a chick is extremely limited.

We have all kinds of animals here... gerbils, fish, a goat, horses, dogs, cats, chickens.... and yes, the kids are exposed to each of them daily. Well, except the goat, but he's evil.

My oldest daughter, who is 9, is responsible for helping with the care of all these critters..... from grooming to feeding to even cleaning up after them, just like I did as a kid. She cleans stalls (horses), cleans lots (goat and dog), cleans brooders(chicks), cleans cages(gerbils), and has been for years. She's not once gotten sick and neither have I.
My youngest daughter, who is 2, interacts and touches the animals daily as well. All of them (again, except the goat, I'm telling I'd trade him in for a good meat bird... dinner for dinner)... and I make sure she washes up well after handling them. She's not gotten sick either.

It's all in your sanitation process. Wash good and you'll be fine.

Just keep your hands clean. I don't go licking my fingers after I pet my dogs or my horses, chickens are just the same.
It's good for kids to be around "unclean" things I think. I ate dirt when I was a kid...I was filty. xD
My immune system is stronger for it though, I'm sure.
If you don't keep your chickens in filthy conditions, I don't see the problem.
Just my opinion. Hope your DH changes his mind about them...that's very unfortunate that some spaz got to him like that.
GO EAT SOME DIRT!

I was worried about handwashing after handeling the chickens and what we are going to do is mount a dispenser for antibacterial handgel on the outside of our run by the door so it is easily accessible to the kids without having to go inside to wash their hands after touching the chickens, collecting eggs, helping to clean the cage etc.

Yay Chicks! :

There's always one jerk off in a group who thinks he knows it all and goes around sprouting complete BS!!

It always burns me up when "some guy at work" or "a friend" has more credibility than they deserve. But then lately I've been pretty peeved over people that believe what they want to believe rather than intelligently investigate.

Just make sure you wash your hands well after handling them. Just as you would after handling most animals. I think you will really enjoy them, and maybe change the hubby's mind too.

Have fun!

That is what people kept telling us too, but puppies and kittens can cause sickness too if you don't care for them right and if you don't make sure to wash up after playing with or handling them.

This is our first time with chicks and my son knows from the time we got our eggs, after you handle them, you wash up or use hand sanitizer.

I would like to say that much like reptiles that "carry" salmonella They have to be exposed to it first they are not born carrying salmonella if they are not cross contaminated with it they won't have it.
