Well, she did say she was just going to ask the neighbor to smoke farther away from the house, which I would think is pretty reasonable. But I wouldn't ever expect someone to quit smoking just for this.

Why does everybody have selective reading capabilities....this is what I said...I never mentioned a porch...I yelled once at night when I was sleep deprived with a fussy baby I just got to nurse and I couldn't reach the window to close it...its not an every day thing...there is a ton of smoke coming in because the new baby rooms reeks like smoke now when the fan is off and window is closed... and most of all...I never would ask anyone to stop smoking, like I said, I'll just be asking that they try the other 3 corners of their yard for a while to see if that helps....my yard corners 3 yards like four squares...they aren't 3 doors down. We bought the house, got pregnant bought the fan that sucks in air, had a heat wave and started using it...and noticing the smell. I think I made a mistake buying something that brings in someone else's smoke...I didn't know we had a chain smoker living next door before the fan...one of our neighbors just had a brother in law move in too so it could be a new thing since the month before I had the baby... I will mention this in my review of the fan.

I no longer have 3 geese or 5 ducks...i have 3 ducks and one goose who is unusually silent unless we bring strangers into her yard....my neighbors dog killed my cat...the other one went to live with my cousin during chemo and will probably live there forever now....

I like my house but I'm getting sick of my neighborhood and I guess I will be moving someday to a farm hopefully where that isn't much of a consideration and I can get a cow instead of having one.

To the grandma who smokes and who's kids wont let the grandkids visit because of the smell...I hope they let you hold them and spend time with them still. My husband's cousin wouldn't even let his sweet mother hold her own grandchildren because she smoked. She never smelled like she smoked to me and she is the most wonderful, gentle woman. She has cancer now and has stopped smoking....I invite her over to hold our baby all the time. In their case I think they deprived the grandmother and their kids of love and bonding that was more important than their kids smelling smokey clothes.

I'm hoping that is just a turn of phrase, because you sure aren't going to like the smell of home brewed methane from the cow.

I vacation on my friends farm...he raises chickens in chicken houses and his house is surrounded by cattle. I can handle animals and their smell....except large concentrations of pigs, they're really nasty. The rules are different in the country and I can live with that...more space is a good thing. We actually want to raise beef cattle if we do have the opportunity to change lifestyles one day. I'm pretty sure this isn't the point though.

why do you think that this will magically be solved if you lived on a farm?
what about when your neighbor burns brush? Or even better the manure pile

Tractor exhaust. hogs. cow farts. spreading turkey manure in the spring time.

pesticides. crop dusters. there are almost as many bad things in the country air as there are in the city. They are just different...

Why is it hard to understand that its cigarette smoke that I don't want in my house...it stinks and makes other things stink. Millions of people don't want it in their home. Other odors or air pollutants that are associated with every day life are not what I am concerned with. I have spent months on my friends farm throughout the years and I could live just fine with the air out there and the distance between houses. He burns his trash downwind and his nearest.neighbor is 2 hills and 4 miles away from his place... that's doable. Why is my desire for a tabacco smell and smoke free home and baby so bad? Our neighborhood isn't hateful like some posters are...wenprettymuch get along and share produce and buy fundraiser junk from eachothers kids...a little compromise to help someone out with a new baby isn't out of the question.

Take into consideration that I live WAY WAY In the country with no offending neighbors. Thank God for that! Still, we have dogs and so we use things to try to cut down on allergens. Air purifiers for instance. Ionic tower fans. I've even got one of those salt rock things that are supposed to help. Try that!

Also, we just bought window a/c units. Seriously it's like $100 for a window unit. They even come with filters.
