Not sure if it was a problem between my three hens last night, or if some other critter got into the coop. Noticed one hens comb flopped over on her face. Closer inspection revealed a pretty good cut on top of her head at the base of the comb. Also saw a bunch of feathers in the coop. The other 2 hens have no damage. Anyway my question is, what should I clean the wound with? And I have sometimes super glued cuts on myself, is this safe for chickens? Thank you in advance for any advise.

Many of the first aid products we use for people can be used on chickens. You just don't want to use any product with benzocaine or lidocaine because birds are very sensetive to those types of pain relieving ingredients. If you haven't already cleaned the wound you can use something like iodine. You can use neosporin on the wound. If there are any signs of bleeding the other chickens may be temped to peck her wound, so it might be a good idea to separate her from the others temporarily. I like to keep a product called Blu-Kote on hand, because it is an antiseptic that has a blue tint to cover up the red wound and reduce the risk of pecking. You can get that at farm supply stores. I may have read about someone using superglue on a chicken once, but you probably do not need it. Chickens grow new skin to close wounds pretty quickly.

Thank you for your reply. I didn't see any blood. I did notice a cut on the comb itself as well as the one at the base of the comb. I will just continue cleaning the wound and hope it heals up.
