Hi I need help. Have a chick that has a clear intestine looking thing on its belly. Are intestines red? Looking at other pics this looks different. It’s clear. Is it umbilical or egg remnants. It is still way around its belly and legs so worried it is something serious and leaking. It is weak but seems to be getting stronger now that all the cord is off.

Thanks for your reply. I think so too. I wonder is there anything I can do for it?
How old is this chick? Usually they will die within a few days from the subsequent infection/blockage of the digestion, so I would put it out of its misery. I just had one hatch with a similar problem, that I put down.

But maybe someone else will chime in with a success story.

It was just hatched today. I was hoping that wasn’t what people would say. I’m so bad. Get attached instantly to these little things. I know though it’s a part of life. 😫 thanks for your reply. I appreciate it so much

I am sorry. :hugs

My chick pushed the lower eggshell with its feet and in doing so, just tore the still attached umbilical cord including the intestines out by itself. My first in more than 20 years of chicken keeping and I waited some hours to see if it might absorb it like they do with the remaining yolk sac. But it was obvious that the infection already started and there was no way these intestines would slip back in unharmed.

That is exactly what I think happened to this little one. I’m glad it doesn’t seem super common based on your experience. Thanks again! 😘

It also now seems to be laboured breathing. My husband thought to put it back with the mom and let nature take its course but I don’t think that’s a good idea. Others may peck at it or it could pass infection maybe? Shouldn’t take the chance. Do you agree?

This sounds as if it is suffering already, so I would not put it back but end it immediately.

There are several ways to do it quick.
