I had way too many birds in my bantam pen and way too much on my plate, so an egg situation got a little crazy. My game bird and showgirl were sitting on more eggs than they could cover. My game bird is viciously protective of her nest, so I faced her wrath and removed all eggs to check their progress. I gave four very developed eggs to her, four maybe week along eggs to the showgirl, and the rest in my incubator. Two days later the gamebird had wrestled control of all eggs under her and the showgirl quit being broody. I also saw a cracked eggshell and then a partially eaten chick that was looking mostly developed. By this point I had moved all the extra birds out, but they could have been in when the egg cracked. There's three other females laying eggs in there and she was hoarding all the eggs again. Meanwhile, an egg in the incubator hatched, so I figured some of her eggs would soon follow. Five days later, no chicks, she has more eggs than she can sit on, and I get brave enough to face off with her again. Only one or two under her even look somewhat close to hatching. There should have been four at about the same stage as the one in the house. I don't see any egg shells or corpses. I marked off six eggs for her and gave the rest to the pigs since they didn't even look started or looked dead from being in the cold. What could be going on? Do I have a chick eater? One of the eggs I left under her is an odd color and close to hatching, so I'll know if it goes missing.

yeah some people have this problem and have to keep the broody separated so the eggs don't get broken when the hens fight. The hens clean up any dead or bad eggs a lot of times.. I have had a couple of eggs that looked like they hatch but no chick. and that broody was locked away.

I always fence my broodies off so this doesn't happen. Other hens will insist on laying in her nest and the eggs can and will get stomped. Mama does her best to clean up. Which is why you don't see any signs.

Just a suggestion, I would check her belly fluff and under her wings too. I had a hen who was on 12 eggs. 2 broke because they were thin shelled and I assumed she cleaned them up. When I was candling her remaining eggs on day 14, I found a mass of matted feathers, egg and egg shell on her chest. I had to clip her to get rid of it. So, mama may have dead babies stuck to her.

That's pretty horrifying. :( I didn't think to look under her when I moved her off the nest today.

I've hatched a lot of chicks using my showgirl and my silkie (she's passed away now). Never had problems keeping everyone together. This is the gamebird's first time being broody. My husband reminded me that we have a gamecamera, so I put that in there facing her nesting area. No one else is broody right now thanks to her. I try to grab the extra eggs when I see them, but sometimes she's quicker than me. :P I'm going to see what the game camera shows tomorrow and decide from there. Thanks for the advice everyone!

So I discovered chickens move a lot. There were a ton of pics to go through. All eggs were fine today. All the pics told me was that my showgirl and the game bird are taking turns brooding. One will sit for a few hours, get up, and the other will sit. When I went to get the card, the showgirl was on the nest. They didn't seem to fight about it in the pics. Every once in a while they'd both sit. I'll check again tomorrow.

The gamebird has one little chick following her and is happy as can be. The showgirl is still sitting. So no chick eaters, thankfully. Still have no clue what happened. Maybe a snake.
