Something gnawed at and bent chain link fence last night

Well, I don't know . . . While I was traveling at the time, and it was an adventure, I'm pretty sure it's not a "Travel Adventure ". :lau

As it happens, I DO write and edit professionally, in a limited way. Limited by the way it's so hard to find work as a freelancer. I call myself semi-pro. Sounds like semicolon. It's very likely apparent from my overuse of commas. :p

I hope these images show up. It appears as though the creature did not make a third attempt overnight. We have neighbors setting off fireworks late into the night, so maybe that has temporarily spooked it. The pics don't show the extent of the bending between, as we did bend them back as best as we could the last two days, but you can see the link deformities where we could not get them back to normal. As you can see in the garden soil, we haven't spotted any tracks to help us figure out what this thing is for certain. According to our city code, we are technically not (legally) allowed to electrocute any fencing here in our suburb. I'll call the county on Monday to see if they can send someone out to inspect our issue and set a larger trap.View attachment 1061369 View attachment 1061371 View attachment 1061369 View attachment 1061373

That's a fortress. I don't think you have anything to worry about with the exception of bear. I'm thinking it may be a dog type animal and it's not going to get through that.

Whoa - that's one strong and determined chicken-eater. My 1st thought is strong wooden fencing up against the chainlink as a 2nd layer, but I totally get your discouragement. Our #1 job is their safety, so here's my advice: stay up until you see what it is, or put a video camera up to record it until it returns. Then take it from there.

Leslielbk, That is exactly what I thought when I started to see these bite marks and bent links. It's scary to think that something that can do this to a metal fence is roaming around our yard at night. Thankfully, we have not seen any new damage the last two days/nights. We've been setting the raccoon trap every night with no new takers to the bait, and I actually placed a bunch of old-fashioned mouse traps around the brick edging (the kind that snap when triggered) in the hopes of at least scaring it off if it steps anywhere on the bricks. So far, none of the traps have been tripped either. I did call animal control today, but they told me to set the trap another night using cat food as bait, and if it doesn't catch anything, they will come out on Wednesday to set a "larger, heavy-duty" trap for us. The man I spoke with stated that they have been catching "fishers" around here that can bite/bend and slip through chain linked fencing. I didn't even know we had fishers around this area either. Good grief, we already built a fortress, but if I had known about all the varmits around here before getting chickens, I might have considered a moat and added some crocodiles under a draw bridge to access the coop.

Razor wire, guard tower, and sharp shooter! Saw the photos - holy hellfire that's a gorgeous setup!! It doesn't look horrible, like I pictured...of course I went to "mangled". But I am curious how high up the damage is. If you mentioned it I didn't see it....not unusual.
