Looks like hubby's a bigger softie than I gave him credit for. While I was out for the evening, he decided he couldn't leave poor Vanilla in the coop all alone since we didn't have time to further predator-proof it, so he brought her into the garage for the night. She is currently sitting on top of the box full of new chicks quietly talking to them now and then.
There is an ad on my local classifieds right now of someone with one hen about the same age looking for a new home. All of their others got killed by a bear. I've sent an email and left a phone message, so I'm hoping our two lonely hens can become roommates.
